All Leaders Must Declare Wealth Online, Says IGG

Appeared in The New Vision on 25 Jan 2017

The Inspector General of Government (IGG) has issued new guidelines, making it mandatory for public officers to declare their wealth under the Leadership Code online.

This follows the launch of a new system, IG-ODS (Inspectorate of Government Online Declaration System), a web-based declaration portal last year.

Demonstrating how the new system works to members of Vision Group executive committee on Monday, Amos Baguma, a Principal Inspectorate Officer, said unlike in the past, all officers will now be required to declare their income, assets and liabilities online and called on members to do it as early as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.

During the meeting, members were mainly concerned with issues of declaring property, especially land that is customary, unregistered or transferred.

Baguma explained that for land that is customarily owned or yet to be transferred, the officers are required to declare the vendor or owners of the land and the village where it is located.

Launching the system last year, the IGG Justice Irene Mulyagonja, contended that the long queues that normally form at the Inspectorate’s headquarters were henceforth a thing of the past.
