Amudat Councillors Appeal To IGG Over Shoddy Work

Amudat. Authorities in Amudat District in Karamoja sub-region have asked the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) to speed up investigations into shoddy work by contractors who were hired to implement some district projects.

During a district council meeting last Friday, the councillors observed that the slow investigation process was making it hard for the district to take appropriate action against the heads of department responsible for supervising shoddy work.

Mr William Lomerilima, the secretary for works and technical services, said most construction projects in the district had stalled as a result of corruption.

“When you look at the projects in the financial year 2015/ 2016, some contractors were paid all the money for the project for unfinished work. This is corruption,” he said.

Ms Paulina Chepar, the secretary for production, said the delay by the IGG team to complete investigations would give room for civil servants to continue misappropriating public funds.

The district chairperson, Mr Francis Kiyonga, blamed the problem on past leadership, who he claimed cared less about the public.

“It’s only in Amudat District where you can get a building not complete after six years and the money is taken. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Ms Ali Munira, the public relations officer in the IGG’s office, acknowledged delay in the investigations citing lack of man power in the region.

She, however, appealed to leaders in the district to be patient, saying an investigation is not like a race, adding that it needs patience.

“We are handling that matter and we shall avail them the report when it is done,” she said.
