Authorities in Parliament face accusations of “cover-up” in a high-profile corruption case involving a top official in Parliament’s budget office despite the director of budget being forced back on leave.
The Parliamentary Commission had suspended the Director of Parliamentary Budget Office, Mr Samuel Wanyaka, on instructions of the Inspector General of Government but later allowed him back in office, without the IGG’s knowledge, before the investigations were completed.
Investigations into what the IGG sources called “cover-up” on the part of the Parliament authorities say IGG Irene Mulyagonja recently received complaints that Mr Wanyaka was engaged in misuse of public funds and that he had allegedly abused his office.
On Thursday, the House spokesperson, Ms Helen Kawesa, denied any cover up by Parliament saying when Mr Wanyaka went on leave, Parliament notified the IGG. “The director returned to office because he was given a normal annual leave of 30 days and IGG investigations were supposed to commence immediately,” Ms Kawesa said.
Ms Kawesa added that because investigations are still ongoing, Mr Wanyaka has been asked to apply for extension of his leave for another 30 days, to allow completion of the investigations. Mr Wanyaka only said the matters under investigations.
