Kampala. A court clerk at Kayunga court was on Monday evening remanded to Luzira Prison for allegedly receiving a Shs150,000 bribe as an inducement to secure bail for a suspect.

Mr Moses Butamanya was produced before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala, and denied three corruption-related charges.

Grade One Magistrate Julius Borore remanded him to prison until July 21 when he will reappear for mention of his case.

Mr Butamanya faces charges of corruptly soliciting for a bribe, corruptly receiving a bribe and obstructing IGG staff who had gone to his office to investigate the allegations.

He becomes the third court clerk to be arrested by the IGG within a period of one month over allegations of demanding a bribe.

According to the charge sheet by the IGG, Mr Butamanya on May 29 corruptly solicited for a Shs500,000 bribe from John Bosco Lubega as an inducement to secure his release on bail. Mr Lubega was facing charges of criminal trespass.

Further, the charge sheet indicates Mr Lubega went on to receive Shs150,000 as a part payment on June 16 before he was arrested by IGG officials after a tip off.

On the count of obstruction, Mr Butamanya is charged along Ms Clare Tushabomwe, a copy typist, Ms Ruth Abonga, an office attendant, and a one, Fausta, a process server.

The four suspects are accused of assaulting, obstructing and delaying IGG investigators while investigating the matter on June 16. The other three suspects are still at large.
