KABAROLE- Police are holding a Fort Portal Chief Magistrates Court clerk accused of taking a bribe.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday by officials from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) office in Fort Portal.
The suspect allegedly solicited Shs 100, 000 from a complainant who had a civil case in the court.
It is alleged that the suspect asked the complainant to give her the money as facilitation for transport and lunch to go and serve the accused person who lives in Kamwenge District.
The complainant is said to have then alerted the IGG, and police arrested the suspect as she received the money in a corridor near the court registrar’s office.
The Officer in charge of criminal investigations at Fort Portal Central Police Station, Mr Joshua Tusingwire, confirmed the arrest.
“Police are holding the suspect as she awaits transfer to Kampala to face charges of corruption in the Anti-Corruption Court,” he said.
He declined to give more details saying that the case is being managed by the IGG.
Judiciary takes action
As part of its fresh clean-up campaign to fight corruption among its officers, the Judiciary on Tuesday issued three short message service (SMS) hotlines to enable the public to report any misconduct in courts. The SMS hotlines; 077-670-9100; 070-370-7085 and 079-470-2085, according to Chief Justice Bart Katureebe, are for the general public to send precise SMS feedback reporting incidents of unprofessional conduct against judicial officers and court support staff.
