The government has tabled a new piece of legislation that seeks to create a Leadership Code Tribunal to deal with politicians and technocrats who abuse taxpayers’ money and use it to amass wealth.

The Leadership Code (Amendment Bill), 2016 proposes to cure the defects in the Leadership Code Act, 2002 by establishing a Leadership Code Tribunal appointed by the President and given the powers of the High Court to deal with leaders who offend the Leadership Code Act.

Ethics Minister Rev Fr Simon Lokodo and the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Irene Mulyagonja, told the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee that the lack of a Leadership Code Tribunal has given holders of public offices who offend the Leadership Code Act latitude to walk away scot-free.
