The Inspector General of Government (IGG) has arrested the Jinja State Attorney on allegations of bribery. Ms Lillian Nandaula, who has occupied the office for less than a month, was arrested yesterday while allegedly receiving money from a complainant before sanctioning a file.
The complainant had gone to court to follow up the status of the case involving a police officer whom he accused of assault. Ms Nandaula allegedly demanded Shs500,000 to sanction a file implicating police officers at a goods transit check point at Bulanga in Luuka District. According to the Luuka District Police Commander, Mr Allan Tugiizire, a man he identifies as Bogere, reported a case to the Police Standards Unit, where he accused officers of using excessive force while impounding goods worth Shs79 million. Mr Bogere, last week reported to the IGG that the state attorney handling his case had asked for Shs500,000 to sanction his file against the police officer. The IGG sent an arrest team last week, but the arrest did not occur because Ms Nandaula reportedly rejected Shs350,000 which Mr Bogere is said to have given her. Yesterday morning, the complainant went to Ms Nandaulaโs office with the full amount, and she allegedly accepted the money. She was promptly arrested and taken to Kampala. Efforts to speak to Ms Nandaula were futile as her phone was off.
