The inspectorate of Government has arrested the Masaka Municipal Council Law enforcement officer, Acquino Matega, in connection with a sh200,000 bribe.
The inspectorate’s officer in charge of Masaka region, Reuben Bainomujuni and the Police nabbed Matega at the Golf Course grounds in Masaka municipality on Tuesday.
Matega is accused of having received the bribe from a trader in Nyendo, identified as Asuman Kiyimba.
Bainomujuni said Matega had initially demanded shs500,000 so as not to close Kiyimba’s motor spare parts Kiosk.
He said the suspect accepted to receive partial payment.
Matega, however, denied the claims, saying the move to arrest him was a set-up.
Matega was handed over to Masaka Central Police station, where he was accordingly charged.
Bainomujuni said Matega will be transferred to the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala. He said the shs200,000 would be used as an exhibit in court.
Bainomujuni advised the Government officials who feel their salary is not enough to resign other than asking money for the services they offer.
