KAMPALA: The Inspectorate of Government has blocked the suspension of nine Kyambogo University staff implicated in the irregular admissions of students, citing an ongoing investigation into mismanagement of the institution.
IGG Irene Mulyagonja last week [September 2] wrote to the university advising against the decision. Ms Munira Ali, the IGG spokesperson, said the officials cannot be suspended before completion of investigations into corruption and maladministration at the university.
“Yes we wrote to them and the directive was to immediately reverse their earlier decision,” she said. The Kyambogo University Council sitting last month had implicated and dismissed nine staff over irregular admission of students.
The pronouncement came on the heels of an internal investigation, which revealed that the affected staff had formed a ‘mafia–like group’ at the university orchestrating irregular admissions.
It is alleged that the staff took advantage of a laxity in the admissions division to insert illegal names in the students information data system.
The IGG also directed that personal files and works be handover to the accused which Daily Monitor understands were submitted last week.
The university spokesperson Mr Lawrence Madete, declined to comment on the matter, referring this newspaper to Vice Chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka whose known phone number remained switched off by press time.
Those involved
The nine include Julius Tumushabe, Rosette Ampaire, Mark Byarugaba, Vincent Kizito and Mubarak Muwaya. Others are Aminsi Kirunda, Gladys Muwanga, Gonzaga Walubi and Emmanuel Mubiru.
