Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has dismissed media reports that he is involved in a fight with the Inspector General of Government Irene Mulyagonja.
Katureebe said yesterday that the media reports were blowing his views out of proportion, adding that he is only trying to do his job to clean up the judicial arm of government which he heads.
The media reports claimed the Chief Justice “blasted” the IGG for her failure to investigate judicial officers involved in bribery.
“It is not my job to fight with the IGG. She is doing her job and she is helping us to catch some thieves. But where something has gone wrong and it is brought to my attention, it is my duty to speak about it,” clarified the Chief Justice yesterday.
Speaking after laying a foundation stone to the construction of the Chief Magistrate’s premises in Mitooma town council, Katureebe said it is impossible to deliver justice to the people if judges in the courts of law are corrupt.
“If people can’t get justice in a court of law, even if the court is in the most magnificent building, we have helped no one,” he said.
The Chief Justice stressed that the fight against bribery in courts of law must carry on, noting that his emphasis is on “putting truthful and fair justice to the right standard in the country.”
“My solution is that when a judge has taken a bribe, they should be dealt with in accordance with the law. That is not quarreling or blasting anyone.”
“If we get one, and you people give us hard evidence that they took a bribe, and we even arrest this person right after getting the bribe, and then we just pat that person on the shoulder and send him home, the people will feel cheated and will lose trust in the courts.”
