Makerere University officials yesterday came under pressure from MPs to explain how sh10.6b collected from lecturers as pension contributions was spent.
Legislators on the Public Accounts Committee head that the university had an outstanding pension liability of sh30.4b at the close of the 2013/14 financial year.
However, the officials deducted more than sh10b from staff and did not deposit it in the staff pension scheme account. The money was later diverted without authority.
The committee recommended that the bursar, the accounting officer and others be investigated by the Inspector General of Government with a view to prosecuting them.
In his latest report (June 2014), Auditor General John Muwanga noted that the officials deducted an additional sh601.7m from university staff pay, which was also not remitted to NSSF.
