Malaba Sub-County Boss Convicted For Corruption

The Anti-Corruption Court last week convicted Malaba Sub-county chairperson Alfred George Obore after he was found guilty of embezzling Shs4 million from the council.

The court also found former town clerk Phillip Gonzaga Opolot and his deputy Samuel Okallany guilty of embezzlement.

The trio will be produced in court presided over by Justice Margaret Tibulya today for sentencing. The offence attracts up to 14 years in jail.

The convicts claimed the money had been used to fund a trip to Rwakitura in Kiruhura District for the councillors to meet President Museveni.

The judge refuted this claim, saying it was out rightly false. On the other hand, the IGG, through Mr Rogers Kinobe, the prosecutor, had said the Shs4 million was part payment for Malaba tender award, which in total was Shs7 million per quarter.

โ€œThe trial magistrate seems to have borne all these facts in mind but nonetheless, found that the accused did not steal the money. That fact finding is contrary to the evidence,โ€ Justice Tibulya ruled.

โ€œThe accused stole the Shs4 million. The appeal succeeds. The order of acquittal is set aside and replaced by an order of conviction for embezzlement.โ€
