Mps Decry Declaring Wealth For Spouses, Children

The legal and parliamentary affairs committee has opposed the declaration of wealth for spouses and children by leaders as required by the Leadership Code Act.

First introduced in 1992, the leadership code requires leaders, their spouses and children to make a public declaration of wealth, assets and liabilities to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) after every two years. MPs are among the leaders supposed to declare their wealth.

However, scrutinising the Leadership Code (Amendment) Bill, which is currently before the committee, the MPs opposed the provision, saying it invades the privacy of their spouses and children.

The IGG Justice Irene Mulyagonja, asked the MPs not to worry about the declaration of their spouses’ and children’s wealth, saying such property is key at the Inspectorate.
