Mps Should Declare Wealth Like The Speaker, IGG

Early last year, Ugandan legislators requested that public officials be required to declare their assets and wealth as a way of curbing corruption.

According to the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC), in 1997, the first tangible effort to have leaders declaring their wealth was made pursuant to the provisions of the Leadership Code, which code was made operational by the 1995 Constitution. So, this reveals that it is not the first time the issue is coming up.

However, to date we see that only a few officials have declared their wealth, with the latest being the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga and the Inspector General of Government, Ms Irene Mulyagonja.

If Members of Parliament have any intentions of being reelected in 2016, then they should declare their wealth. By doing that, I am certain we would be sure of their commitment to serve and not simply amass wealth.

So dear MPs, unless you have something to hide, please do what is expected of you as a leader by declaring your wealth.
