The Parliament Appointments Committee has approved the selection of Justice Irene Mulyagonja as the Inspector General of Government.

Ms Mulyagonja, a former High Court Judge in the Commercial Court division, was appointed a week ago by President Museveni to replace acting IGG Rapheal Baku whom court had on several occasions faulted for having no powers to prosecute corruption cases.

After emerging from the closed-door vetting session at Parliament yesterday, Justice Mulyagonja said: “Each IGG who has passed in there (office) has made their own contribution. The fight against corruption shouldn’t be politicised, and we must ensure that we use objective processes where everyone accused is investigated.”

Improving institution

In an earlier interview with Daily Monitor, Ms Mulyagonja said she wanted to improve the institution. “I want it developed into an institution that is respected by all Ugandans to execute the mandate it was given in the statute that creates it,” she said.

The Constitutional Court recently ruled that acting IGG Baku was holding the position illegally. This followed a petition by Ministers Sam Kutesa, John Nasasira and Mwesigwa Rukutana, challenging the powers of Mr Baku to prosecute them for offences related to Chogm.
