Probe District Contract Awards, Say Councillors

KALANGALA. Kalangala District councillors have asked the Inspectorate of Government and the Ministry of Local Government to immediately investigate reports that some civil servants are illegally awarding themselves contracts to supply different items and services to the district.

Councillors led by Wilberforce Kakooza, who represents Kyamuswa Sub-county, told journalists in Kalangala Town on Saturday that the action by the civil servants is not only in breach of the Local Government Act and Public Service Standing Orders, but also frustrates service delivery in the district.

“We all know the burden of providing services to islanders. Whenever we go for monitoring, we find that almost all work done, especially in the construction sector, is shoddy yet all monies are appropriated but swindled by some civil servants who front their companies,” Mr Kakooza said.

“We now demand an immediate independent audit so as to punish all culprits who engage in such activities.” he added.
