Teacher Ordered To Pay Sh180M

Appeared in The New Vision on 08 Jul 2015

The Inspector General of Government (IGG) has directed a former head teacher of Kikyogoga Secondary School in Nakaseke district to refund sh187m, which he allegedly diverted.

The money, which was meant for the construction of dormitories, is said to have been diverted between 2011 and 2013. It was part of a sh400m presidential grant to construct dormitories in seed secondary schools in the cattle corridor in Nakaseke.

As a result of the alleged diversion, the constriction of the dormitories stalled in 2012. The incomplete structures cannot be used to accommodate students.

According to the IGG’s report, which is addressed to the district LC5 chairman, Ignatius Koomu, sh413m was paid into the school account for the construction of two dormitories and five-stance latrine between 2011 and 2013.

However, according to the same report, the contractor, KAAM Construction Company, received only sh195m as partial payment for the construction of the two dormitories.

The report implicates a former headmaster, Damiano Kato and some of the former school board members who were signatories to the school account.
