We Can'T Publicise Declared Wealth

Addressing journalists in Kampala yesterday, she said publicising the wealth without the backing of the law could invite law suits.

“Supposing we declared them and that person’s image and reputation is injured, we will be liable and that is not what we want,” Ms Mulyagonja said.

Whereas the Leadership Code, under which public officials are compelled to declare their assets and liabilities, demands that the submissions be made to the IGG to promote transparency, it is silent on whether the declarations can be made public.

Ms Mulyagonja, however, says the public can report officials whose expenditure is visibly above their known incomes.

“The public knows all these people better than we do. So if one of them tries to buy any asset at a sum that they think is exorbitant, we encourage them to come and tell us that such a person has a salary of Shs4 million and they are buying land in billions,” she added.

She also asked that a second deputy IGG be named and more money be made available to the inspectorate.
